The Basin

From its clear, cool streams in the Appalachian Mountains to its brackish marshes along the Gulf Coast, this freshwater region covers nearly 10 percent of the United States. The rivers of the Southeast – specifically the Cumberland, Mobile and Tennessee River Basins – are among the world’s richest freshwater ecosystems. Together these river basins support more than 30 percent of fish species in the United States and over 50 percent of the nation’s mussel species.
