Great Barrier Reef

The Challenges

Sugarcane is one of Australia’s most important industries, worth up to $2.5 billion to its economy. However, large quantities of pesticides, contaminants and other pollutants can enter the freshwater and marine system through unsustainable farming practices, leading to harmful consequences for biodiversity, soil, water and air and threatening the region’s ecology. Without significant changes to farming practices, the world’s largest living organism – the Great Barrier Reef – will be destroyed.
