Amazon River

The Challenges

Rapidly expanding global markets for meat, soy, mineral and metal commodities, bio-fuels, and large-scale transportation and energy infrastructure projects coupled with poor planning, fragile governance and lack of an integrated sustainable development vision for the Amazon are contributing to accelerated rates of deforestation and placing increased pressure on natural resources and environmental services. Increased temperatures and decreased precipitation caused by global warming will exacerbate these trends and could lead to the collapse of the tropical moist forest ecosystem.
