Northern Great Plains

The Basin

The Northern Great Plains (NGP) spans more than 180 million acres and crosses five U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. As large as California and Nevada combined, this short- and mixed-grass prairie and sagebrush habitat is one of only four remaining intact temperate grasslands in the world. NGP covers most of the northern half of the 529,000 mi2 Missouri River watershed, feeding the longest river in the United States, which covers one sixth of the lower 48 states.
